  7.                                WinGreek For MS Windows
  8.            
  9.                1.0. WinGreek  is a  Software Package to enable IBM Personal
  10.           Computers or Compatibles running Microsoft Windows to use ancient
  11.           Greek  and  Hebrew  fonts.  It  consists  of two parts: Fonts and
  12.           Utilities.
  13.                1.1 Fonts. Bitmap/Raster Fonts  are available  for Hercules,
  14.           EGA,  VGA,  super-VGA  (800x600)  and  8514 (1024x768) monitors /
  15.           screens, Epson 9-Pin and 24-Pin Printers, and HP-Laser Jet Series
  16.           II  /  III  /  IV  Laser  Printers  or Compatibles. Recently both
  17.           Postscript (Adobe Type 1) and TrueType versions of  Greek, Hebrew
  18.           and Coptic  Fonts were also released with WinGreek (Version 1.8).
  19.           Using our Postscript Fonts under Adobe  Type Manager  or TrueType
  20.           Fonts with  Windows 3.1  allows scalable Point Sizes and provides
  21.           support for printers such as the HP Desk Jet-indeed for all other
  22.           printers which are supported by Microsoft Windows. The Postscript
  23.           Fonts may also be uploaded to a Postscript Printer as  a SoftFont
  24.           using the Postscript Driver in Windows 3.0 / 3.1.
  25.                1.1.1.  The  Greek  font  contains  a full set of diacritics
  26.           (diaeresis,  Aristarchian  signs)  and  also  Accent  / Breathing
  27.           combinations,  together  with  archaic  Greek  characters such as
  28.           digamma, koppa and sampi. The Hebrew font contains consonants and
  29.           vowel  points  (niqqud)  which  can  be combined using a macro in
  30.           Word for Windows.
  31.                1.1.2. Since the Greek and Hebrew fonts are  attached to the
  32.           operating  system  of  Microsoft  Windows  and  are not part of a
  33.           particular Word Processor, they  are  available  to  any  and all
  34.           Windows executable  programs which allow for full font selection.
  35.           So far WinGreek Fonts have been  tested with  Windows Write, Word
  36.           For Windows,  Ami-Pro and  WordPerfect For  Windows. One can even
  37.           use them in a data-base program  which allows  for font selection
  38.           or a spreadsheet software like Microsoft Excel. Thus one need not
  39.           be committed to  or  limited  by  particular  software.  Many new
  40.           programs for the Windows graphical environment are being
  41.           developed  either  for  desktop  publishing  or  data retrieval /
  42.           storage and searching texts.
  43.                1.1.3. The Windows operating  system is  a WYSIWYG graphical
  44.           environment or  interface (What  You See  Is What  You Get). Thus
  45.           WinGreek  allows  for  creation   of  documents   using  European
  46.           languages in  combination with  ancient Greek  and Hebrew and one
  47.           can see on screen exactly how the final  product will  print out.
  48.           The Greek bolds, italicizes, subscripts or superscripts on screen
  49.           matching what  will  print.  This  is  an  advantage  in creating
  50.           complex documents.

  52.                1.2. Utilities.  There are  two main utilities provided with
  53.           WinGreek.
  54.                1.2.1. First, there  is  a  keyboard  handler,  called BETA,
  55.           which allows  for easy insertion of accented characters in Greek,
  56.           Hebrew and European fonts. For example, in Greek you may  type an
  57.           omega. If you type a forward slash (/) next, this will produce an
  58.           acute accent on the omega. Accents and breathings may be combined
  59.           on a  vowel. The  same procedure  is used for entering accents in
  60.           European languages like the accent grave in French  or the umlaut

  66.           in German.  All accents  in the ANSI Character Set are supported.
  67.           In Hebrew, right to left typing is available  (but not  left word
  68.           wrap  as  this  is  a  function  of the word processor). A set of
  69.           macros is provided for Word for  Windows which  greatly eases the
  70.           task  of  switching  between  Greek,  Hebrew and European fonts /
  71.           languages within the same document. With only a  single keystroke
  72.           one may switch functions in Beta and fonts in WinWord at the same
  73.           time. There  are  also  some  specialized  macros  (for  Word For
  74.           Windows )  which permit quick correcting of accents on a vowel in
  75.           Greek or adding underdotting  for  epigraphical  or papyrological
  76.           publications.
  77.                1.2.2. The second utility is a conversion program (GRKCONV).
  78.           This program takes Greek  and Hebrew  files in  the ASCII  or DOS
  79.           Text  format  supplied  by  CCAT (Center for Computer Analysis of
  80.           Texts, University  of Pennsylvania)  on their  Disks and CD-ROMs,
  81.           and converts them for use under Windows. (Similarly, Scriptorium,
  82.           a program created by Randall Smith  for searching  TLG (Thesaurus
  83.           Linguae  Graece)  on  CD-ROM  uses  WinGreek Fonts). Thus one may
  84.           convert, for example, a passage from the Bible to Greek or Hebrew
  85.           and  insert  it  into  a  document under Word For Windows without
  86.           typing out the text. Since Word For Windows allows searches to be
  87.           font specific,  one can search texts containing several languages
  88.           and search, for example, in Greek  only.  One  may  wish  to make
  89.           notes on an ancient text. Simply import the text and add notes or
  90.           edit as you like.

  92.                2.0. WinGreek is available as "Shareware". It may be
  93.           examined, tested, and tried  out for  free. Anyone,  however, who
  94.           intends to  use the product must pay a registration fee of #20.00
  95.           or $35.00 per computer. 2.1.  WinGreek  requires  Windows  3.0 or
  96.           3.1, and  works best  with Word for Windows 1.1 or 2.0 (Winword).
